Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a type of sulphur which is naturally found within all cells of the human body. MSM is important component in the formation of collagen, elastin, cartilage and keratin, therefore it may improve flexibility and strength of muscles, bones, joints and internal membranes. Because it strengthens the hair, skin and nails, it is also known as beauty mineral.
But mostly, people are using MSM to lessen inflammation and for antioxidative properties. There is evidence that MSM may help with the pain and swelling of knee osteoarthritis. Early animal research has shown some promise for decreasing joint degeneration.
Two studies have shown a reduction in oxidative biomarkers after MSM Methylsulfonylmethane ingestion. Limited small studies have also shown that MSM may help with exercise recovery.
MSM has also shown some effectiveness for treating allergies, repetitive stress injuries, certain bladder disorders like intestinal cystitis, and wounds.
For better absorption of the MSM powder, add it to your water along with a botanical source of vitamin C like orange or lemon juice. Start with 1/8th to 1/4th teaspoon of powder each day in glass of water for one week, and gradually work your way up to 2 to 3 tablespoons per day. You can also add MSM in creams, shampoos and soaps.
So far studies have shown minimal side effects when MSM is taken orally, but some people may experience mild gastrointestinal side effects such as discomfort or diarrhoea.
There is a lack of scientific evidence on the use of MSM during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so you should check with your health care provider before taking MSM.
